Hi folks,
For some time now, I have been (slowly) working on a second book that’s part of the Small Magic universe.
Slowly is the key word. I was reflecting tonight (as I rocked a sleepy baby), that it’s been almost three years since I started writing this sequel (or prequel?) to Little Birds and Other Small Magic. At first, it felt like it couldn’t possible be true.
It feels like it was only yesterday that I opened up the Word doc and wrote the first chapter, but it has to be true: I remember bringing the manuscript with me to Wyoming, when we visited my sister. H was 11 months old, and he’s three now. Does every parent use their children’s ages as yardsticks in time? Regardless, time has flown.
I made little progress on the sequel in the coming years. Life was so busy and hard, so much of the time. We were living in New Jersey with my parents, helping my dad as my mom entered the last stages of dementia, and I simply didn’t have the emotional or mental room for creativity. I think it’s why this blog dried up, too.
But now, in our own house again (and despite the mountain of other things that having three kids, a full time job, an old creaky house, and lots of hobbies entails), the words seem to be flowing again. In the last few months, my publisher and I have been meeting weekly to make sure that I’m staying on track with my word counts and keeping the story moving. And it’s paying off. In the last month, the story has grown from 5,000 to 25,000 words, each word written in the stolen hours after the kids are in bed and Jordan and I are procrastinating going to bed.
I’m not happy with many of those words (one never is), but I love the story, and it’s been so fun to dive into it again.
The words are flowing on this blog, too. We’ve got so much neat stuff going on, and I have so many thoughts about what’s going in the world and within our lives. We’ve been through a lot these last few years, and I’m finally ready to begin processing it all. Because I tend to process through writing, I suspect this blog will flourish. So if you’ve been missing Feathery Thoughts updates, you can look for new posts on Thursdays at 10 a.m. EST. I can’t promise they’ll always be great, or even good–I’m trying to defeat my perfectionism when it comes to this blog–but they’ll be something.
Finally, in regard to book one, Little Birds and Other Small Magic, it’s now available on multiple platforms. If you haven’t read it yet, and want to, you can find it on Amazon, Thriftbooks, Barnes and Noble. If you have read it and want to drop a word on whether you liked it or not, you can leave a review on Goodreads–which helps other folks decide whether they want to read it. No pressure, of course.
And if you’re still here reading this post after my years of silence, all I can say is thank you. The connections that this blog has enabled me to have continually humbled me through the years. Let’s hope it can foster connection for many years to come!
Cheers,
Sarah
