On Picking Up Hobbies

Posted on August 9, 2022August 8, 2022 by sbuckleit

Last week, I read an article on hobbies that talked about the fact that most people struggle to pick them up and then keep going. As someone who has both glommed onto my hobbies as a central, shaping force in my life, and abandoned hobbies (like the guitar I tried to pick up in college), … Continue reading On Picking Up Hobbies →

On Habits

Posted on August 18, 2019November 21, 2019 by sbuckleit

What does your typical morning look like? If you're anything like me two months ago, it went like this: the alarm goes off. You snooze it. And snooze it again. And again. Finally, the dogs click-clack cheerfully into the room, demanding to be let out. You extract yourself from the sweaty, sweet nest of your … Continue reading On Habits →

Well folks, it’s been a month, and I’m still procrastinating recording myself talking about this book for our Kickstarter video. Anyone have tips for getting over how weird it is to record yourself talking? In other news, we’re honing in on the final cover design, which is SUPER exciting. I will say though that now that the story is finalized, I really miss working on it. The writing and editing parts are definitely my favorite parts of the whole novel-making process. It’s probably a sign that I should keep working on that sequel! https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cs46GgSLm17/ 4.5 and 95 years old! Happy birthday, Grandma Iz, you’re an inspiration to us all in the art of aging gracefully. I’m so proud to have you as my grandma, and to have inherited so many of your wonderful quirks (including an inability to walk in a straight line, sitting on my feet, and falling asleep on trains). There’s no one I’d rather be like! Snuggly Sunday with this fluffernutter, on a quilt that could’ve come straight outta my novel. The oldest and the (current) youngest of the fam, celebrating @sham_wowlock and @dsarma13’s wedding. Thanks for a wonderful bash! EDIT: this is not a pregnancy announcement! I was referring to my cousin’s new baby, who is due to arrive in July! Huge congrats to @whiskyweasel for successfully defending his dissertation. It’s been a wild 4.8 years—I watched this guy work his tail off for his PhD through equally parenting two babies, navigating a pandemic, and now helping to care for his mother-in-law, and do it all with style and charm. To say I’m proud is an understatement 🥹 One of those days where I need to hum this song to myself on repeat. Currently standing at a park, waiting for AAA to arrive and rescue Hollis, who locked himself in the car. At least the view is pretty? 🫠 UPDATE: the car has been unlocked and Hollis freed! Loving the springtime back deck right now 🌸. A quick update on the book: I got my copy edits back, and they’re fairly minimal! Now I just have to read through the entire book to sign off on each and every one (and then come to a consensus with my publisher). The next big thing is setting up a Kickstarter, which will function as a pre-order of the ebook (with some exclusive bonus book items) 📖 Do I look author-y enough? Today I did my first ever author visit at a school, and as I was getting dressed I felt a little bit like I had to put an author costume on—like it was the glasses or the crazy hair that made me an author, not the person behind those things writing the words. But there was a perk to trying to look authory—when I read a line in the first chapter about Mary’s round glasses, one of the girls pointed out that I too had round glasses, and so it made it easy to picture 🤓. Overall, it was such a fun visit, and the kids asked the smartest questions! They also got a sneak peek at the second book, and gave me some great feedback on where I should take it. Thanks for having me @paintedoak ❤️
